Where do I get missing codecs and how do I make movies play on WMP?

I bought a new laptop, but movies and video clips do not play on Windows media player. I get a message that some codecs are missing. Where do I get them and how do I fix the damned thing?

    Try downloading the Windows Essential Codecs Pack. It has all the decoders you’ll need. You can download it safely and freely from CNET’s download.com.

    Codecs can be downloaded from many sites, I suggest downloading the free KLite codec pack, its a single file which can install many different codecs all at once. Try googling it.
