How do the codecs in metal gear solid work?

I was wonder how they work. They could be standing right next to each other and they need to use the codecs. how can the person speak into it. They are made so only the person who’s ear it is in hears it but other people can hear the person talking and how can they change the frequency on it.

    I think it was related to the nanomachines in their bodies, but I’m not sure if that’s the case.

    my guess is There voice activated to keep The enemy from understanding key words and phrases in various messages. voice commands are used to change frequencies the mic is attached to snake’s ear piece, true others are able to hear both parties if their tuned in to their frequency. your’s truly…revolver ocelot… long live big boss!
